I have a daughter that is 19 and has learning disabilties. We are having trouble figuring out what she should do for the rest of her life. She really has no ideas and has tried several things. She is currently in college, but getting ready to drop out because it is too hard. She is working in daycare but doesn’t like it. Is there a test/tool or something to help us determine what she might be good at or interested in? Please let me know.
How to choose a career
Hello,
I’m sorry to hear she’s having a hard time. I’ve been there. I agree with what eoffg said, and to piggyback on that, I am went to an excellent Jump Start your Job Search (having nothing to do with disabilities), one of the speakers “Ford Meyers” author of Get the job you want even when no one’s hiring” in his book he has some excercises, so he sent me the link in an email with the downloadable to excercises - which I will include the link at the bottom of the page. I have a learning disabilitie, and now I think I finally know what I but I found this book helpful, as well as are the excercises. http://www.careerpotential.com/bookbonus/toolkit.html
The book is on itunes, but you need to have ipod/ipad. If you look for it, look it up by title not by author, for some odd reason it didn’t come up by author’s name.
Good Luck!
ps. if your daughter needs up advice/suggestions… she can also email me at [email protected]
Hi Newbolt and welcome here,
Rather than trying to pick something specific, it might be better to first identify a general area of work, and the sort of things that she is interested in and likes doing? Then looking at the different options?
You also wrote that she is working in daycare, but doesn’t like it. But are their some things that she does like about working in daycare?
