I don’t even know where to start, but have been struggling with these issues for years. Only now is it starting to make sense.
I am 43 and suspect that I have dyscalculia. I was dxd with ADHD a few years ago when my oldest was dxd at age 10. When her dr. evaluated me, he explained that I have problems with patterns and sequencing.
While I haven’t had the external hyperness, I mostly struggle with mental hyperactivity, restlessness, boredom, hyperfocusing &/or losing focus as well as being unorganized, forgetful.
In addition, I have always struggled with math and numbers. Not just in algebra and higher functioning math, but in basic everyday math. My finances are a mess and even though I make adequate money, I’m always behind or out of money and am way over my head in debt.
I’m so embarrassed and stressed out, but don’t know where to turn. I do have insurance but don’t know if it would cover any kind of evaluation or where to even request help.
Plus, I don’t know if getting an evaluation would eve help me at this point. I do know that it makes my job difficult and it’s a challenge to help my daughters even with the most basic of math.
Is it possible to teach an old dog new tricks? I’m willing to do whatever it takes to improve my math skills, but don’t have a clue where to turn.
Ironically, I have my masters in library science and work in a career college as a librarian. I’ve also been a school librarian, an English teacher and have tutored students with reading problems.
So how can I learn to teach myself or find someone who can help me? It seems so difficult to find help for adults who struggle with learning math.
My self-esteem is so low and I alternate between depression and anxiety because I feel like such a screw up.
Sorry this is so long, but I’m just feeling so lost out there in this.
Hi My3angels,
I run a Forum for Dyscalculia where you would be most welcome. We also have a member: Kathy, who is also a librarian and has recently taken up a tutoring position at her local school.

You also wrote that you have difficulties with patterns and sequencing?
I have recently been reviewing research into pattern thinking,[patterning] in relation to Dyscalculia.
Where I also found a free online program to develop patterning abilities. Which could also help develop your maths skills.
