new to site....doing research

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Hello, It has just been recently expressed to me that I might have a ld so I googled up some websites and came here and have gathered some interesting facts about LD but I have NO idea what kind of LD I might be dealing with. I have read several forum posts that describe some of the personality traits that an LD’er might exhibit but traits are not a firm enough path to confirm an LD. Who can I talk to that would be able help me know? How can I ask for an assessment? Who do I ask for one? LOL
Im in my late forties and as a rule have always had a job that never really asked to much of me to warrant an examination. Hmm I wonder if that in iteself isnt the real issue.
I would gratefully appreciate some insight

Hi copperhead,
What are some of the reasons that you think you have a learning disability? (I have an auditory processing disorder - I can hear sounds, but can’t always decipher words too well under certain circumstances. I also can’t tell left from right.)

Yes, if you give a listing of major symptoms, there are many knowledgeable people around here who can give you suggestions and guide you to further articles. Just a general feeling of maybe having an LD is not enough to diagnose.
Do read the articles on the LD In Depth page on this site; tons of good information there.

Insurance paid for a neuropsychological eval. for me. It was fascinating :) Definitely more useful info than “personality traits,” since it isolated thinking patterns and different kinds of memory and what could be done with them. (To no one’s surprise, I have a very poor “Memory for lists.” No wonder I can never remember what I was going to do!)
