The Martial Arts

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I have been in the Martial Arts since I was 3 which is a year younger than the actual age a kid would usually start, you can start at any age but that is the earliest age. while the Martial arts never really helped me until later on with my Academics it helped me alot of with my social Skills just as much as the acting and singing, I found that I gained alot out of it and though I never competed in Tournaments I went to alot of places and trained in Kickboxing, Judo, tae Kwon do and Shotokan Karate, I have trained with Top Names Like Don the Dragon Wilson, 23 time Kickboxing Champion Jean Yves Thierault, and alot of other famous names that might ring abell if your into action films, I was wondering has anyone ever thought of putting their child into the Martial Arts or put them into it?
the Martial arts taught me so much about Respect, Control, and patients
and it does not matter your Physical or Mental abilities, The martial arts never gives up on you, I new a kid once who had a case of Osteroperoses his bones were so brittle that his sensi’s had to pad him down to keep his bones from breaking, training was pure agony for him and he tested 6 times before receiving his black belt, nobody told him he couldnt and nobody said he wouldnt, they kept giving him encouragment and making believe he could. I have been in it for 17 years and have found that I must have a yes I can attitude and always believe I can
sometimes its the impossible that pushes us to believe that anything is possible.

Hope you try it, I retired or left so to speak from the Martial arts for personal reasons but I will always have it in my heart.

My son finally had the time to begin Tai kwon do this past year and he really likes it. I can see that it will help his coordinationg and focus, but I’m curious about how you feel it helps socially. This is also an area we’d like to work on. Thanks!

Thanks![/quote] Thats an interesting Question for people its many different things, working together as a team one guy holding the Pads the other guy doing the techniques whether it be Lunch punches, front Kicks or spinning back Kicks, each one encouraging the other one to do his best and pump it out, Sparring and learning control when you spar you dont just work to beat the other person you actually work with them, each of you trading of techniques
you learn alot of respect and when students respect each other they can build friendships.
finding someone who shares the same interests and encourages you to do your best is what can build friendshps, I found friends in the Martial arts because alot of the students had confidence in me and supported me
they were patiented with me and allowed me to learn at my own pase
I become friends with them, because they didnt treat me different they treated me and made me feel like I belong,
for your son making friends might be different in the martial arts but all the things the Martial arts can teach you, Comradrie, friendship, respect, Dignity, confidence, all these things can build you up as a person and allows for you to build your self esteem and see a postive light, when your son finds himself seeing those things he will make friends.

Dear Karen, its what the Martial arts teaches and builds that will lead your son to build his social skills as well as other skills, he will learn things about himself that he might have thought impossible
your son will not automatically make friends, The Martial arts will teach him all the things I mentioned, its the confidence, self respect, respect
for others and an increase in self esteem that will utimately help him
I had great teachers who really taught me alot, your son will learn the true meaning of the Martial arts when he applies these lessons to daily life
but it takes time and patients and support and the important thing is to have your son believe in himself, and believe in him too
