Maturity ?

Hi everyone,
My child has been labeled dyslexic. The school seems to think my child is very immature and wants to retain my child. All children are immature. Does anyone feel it is an appropriate decesion? Has this happened to anyone whose child has dyslexia? My child hates school now, cries everyday to be homeschooled. Any help or advise would be greatly appreaciated.

There are many studies that show retention is more damaging than helpful.

Does your child have an IEP? What accommodations are being provided? Is your child getting the help he/she needs to overcome the dylsexia?

Thanks for replying. You have eased my fears of not wanting my child to be held back. I knew there was a real reason for the educational problems. I wish I would have sought professional help sooner. Yes my child has had an IEP. Only accomidations I can remember right now are extra time on test and some parts to be read to her on state wide assesments. Special ed services were given last year for reading, spelling, and language. They are supposed to be the same this year. I plan on making several changes in the education plan for this year. We have seen a specialist who has given the diagnosis dyslexia ( they still have the IEP that’s why I am unable to state what the provision are right now. I am thinking about having a psycholigical exam (to cover the prior damage that has occoured, because lack of proper diagnosis and help. I am also going to request that any class work be given on colored paper and not white (not sure if it will make a difference). My child has been in special ed at school for 1 year and no one ever mention color overlays when reading. I had some one in another county look at her IEP’s and they gave me some overlays to use. We used them this summer and the reading seems to be a little better. Any more advice or help is greatly appreaciated.

If you are interested in colored overlays, visit http://www.irlen.com It is important that the proper colors be used, otherwise you could do more harm than good. It would be good to have her screened by someone trained in Irlen Syndrome. My dd has Irlen Syndrome as one of her dx’s. She uses purple paper for all her written work, adapts computer screens so that she can focus on them longer and has learned that reading in dim light works best for her.
