Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I am providing a social skills program for male teens who have learning disabilites. I would like to show a movie to the guys that would break up the classes, but am still looking for one appropriate for high school viewing and one that will relate to social skills ie. decision making and consequences, at-risk behaviour, etc. Thanks for all your help!! kate

I just saw this post and a movie I saw on a plane last year came to mind—I can’t think of the name and actually missed the beginning of it. I do remember it had Sharon Stone as the blue collar mother of a brilliant child who is slowly dying of some disease and an alienated boy who becomes friends with him. I’m sure it is out on video as I think it wasn’t a huge hit. (I think it had a 2000 release.) Video stores often have indexes by stars’ names so you could look up Ms. Stone. (I think the word Giant was in the name.) I don’t know the rating and since it was on the plane where they sanitize bad words and violence (which I really like) you’d need to check out the rating first. Also another movie a saw on a plane recently “Pay it Forward” could be a possibility, but there’s quite a bit about alcoholism in it and some talk about casually sleeping around. (Both are depicted in a negative way.) Also, have you thought about “My Dog Skip”—I’m pretty sure this was rated PG but it may not be on point as the main character grows up to be an author.
