Problem with making new friends

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I have a 9 year old daughter with dyslexia and dyscalculia. For the past 2-3 years we have had trouble getting Amy to make new friends, she seems to stick to one child and latch onto them and then the child complains that Amy is just too much in your face (if you know what I mean - will only want to play with that child and have her all to herself!). The problem is that she lives 2 doors up from our house as well. Amy loves Emma very much but Emma is getting fed up with Amy only wanting to have Emma to herself every day. I have spoken to her teacher and Emma’s mother trying to smooth things out (as her mother is my friend!). I know she will loose Emma altogether. Today Amy came home crying saying no one in THAT SCHOOL likes her and they hate her….. I have spoken to her teacher and she will have a quiet word with Amy. I managed to get Amy away from a group of 4 children who always taunted her and teased her and she is such a sensitive girl which makes it very unhappy. You try and tell a child that their friend doesn’t want to play with them anymore - Amy thinks they all hate her… Any ideas - I am pulling my hair out through this one and getting upset myself!!

please please help!

Maybe more structured play time for the time being might help. Inviting a child to go with your daughter and you to the movies or over to watch a rented film or to the zoo. With you there and possibly to intervene if necessary, your daughter is much less likely to be “clingy” on the other child.

Lessons can also help to establish some structured interaction with other children. Ballet lessons, girl scouts, group swimming lessons at the Y. These kind of things can give children play experience and even some ways to make new friendships out of their school.

Good luck.
