social skills with emotional trama

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

How do you tell people that you are ld and adhd inattention without them treating you like your not intelligent. I have lost great jobs, not because I couldn’t do them but, because after telling them of my problem they start treating as though I am stupid and can’t understand oral instruction. I recently been out of full-time job, partly because of job market and partly because am so angry. Unfornaturely, because of implusitivty I show that emotion by exploing at the wrong moment. I don’t have insurance, so I can’t afford medication and with side affect, I personally don’t want to either. When I was on zoluft, it did help some. What I want know is there any programs for adults under 6o but over 30 years. I tried in NJ,but they have cut programs.

I know that most states in this area have rehabilitation programs (just put your state name in front of ‘rehabilitation program’ to get the name to look up) - in Texas, TRC helps people who were identified as LD or ED or MR get and maintain jobs, pays for tools and uniforms, and helps those whose skill are good go to college - I teach, and we also have a vocational program for our high school students. Our local community college has a program for upping skill levels so that students can go on to take regular classes. For the most part, though, there is no special ed in real life. Most of our LD students learn to control impulsivity and act appropriately in high school; meds do seem to help some students. One suggestion is to call a counselor at a local high school or a diagnostician and ask for the number for something similar in your state, whatever they use for transition out for their Seniors would probably help you also if you were identified as LD in high school. I do understand to a degree as I also have a math learning disability and have to struggle with myself to stay seated during meetings - in 7th grade, I was reading on a 12th grade level, but as a 35 year old, I had a 7th grade math level - I also know that it’s possible to learn to control impusivity out of necessity as I’ve had to too - so has my son - here’s hoping the best for you.
