English Sports Association for People with Learning Disability National Championships June 2002
The English Sports Association for People with Learning Disability (ESAPLD) is a national charity and the recognised governing body for learning disability sport in this country. Our role is to both develop and deliver opportunities in sport for some of the one million people in England who have a learning disability (mental handicap)
Access to sport for people with learning disability has become somewhat limited in the past few years, and at present there are few opportunities to compete in National level competition. Indeed, National level competition only exists in two sports, namely swimming and athletics. This is something the ESAPLD wishes to address. We are currently attempting to secure the funding to hold a National Championship to be held over one weekend in June 2002. The event will initially consist of five sports (to be confirmed), which, depending on the success of the first championships, will increase yearly to encompass a greater number of activities.
