(Learning Specialist)

Organizational Relationship: The academic services counselor (learning specialist) reports to the director of academic services who reports to the dean of student development. The counselor shares secretarial support with other personnel in the Center for Academic and Career Planning Services.

Summary: The academic services counselor (learning specialist) is responsible for designing, implementing, and coordinating learning assistance programs and services for the undergraduate students of North Park University. The counselor develops educational plans for high-risk students and students with learning disabilities. The counselor also has basic advising and registration responsibilities.

Responsibilities:
Assist, and advocate for, high-risk and learning disabled students.
Work with high-risk and learning disabled students and their families in developing individual educational plans.
Monitor and support provisionally-admitted students until they declare their major field of study.
Contribute to a comprehensive learning assistance program by teaching, or facilitating, appropriate remedial and skills-development courses.
Work cooperatively with the members of the athletic department to monitor and support student-athletes.
Encourage the matriculation of new students by assisting with pre-registration.
Assist the Office of Undergraduate Admissions in selecting appropriate students for admission by evaluating learning disabled students and providing admission recommendations in accordance with federal and state regulations.
Monitor and support probationary students
Assist undeclared students with regard to basic advising, exploration and selection of a major field of study
Support the mission and goals of the Center for Academic Services and the Division of Student Development by attending regular meetings.
Support the mission and goals of the University, the Division of Student Development, and the Center for Academic Services by assuming other responsibilities as assigned by the University president, the provost, the dean of student development, or the director of academic services.

Qualifications:
A bachelors degree in special education or a related field; a masters degree is strongly preferred.
Three-five years of direct experience in learning assistance, advising, or student personnel work at a college, university, or other institution of higher education.
A knowledge of disability issues and ADA regulations affecting post-secondary students and an understanding of accepted testing and assessment practices in American higher education related to learning assistance and disabled students.
A knowledge of learning and study skills assessments and tools, such as LASSI.
A commitment to, and appreciation of, the Christian mission of North Park University.
Sensitivity to multicultural and gender issues and support for diverse and underrepresented populations.
A developmental understanding of post-secondary students and a desire to facilitate and encourage this development in a supportive and service-oriented environment.
The ability to effectively communicate with students, administrators, faculty and staff members, and outside constituencies.
The ability to effectively coordinate many overlapping tasks.
