I know it’s possible, but how do I go about getting the board of ed to pay for the private school I finally sent my kids to? After years of fighting with the public school system, I finally found a WONDERFUL, small school (10 kids to a class), where my kids are doing incredibly well. But as the single mom of 2 early adolescent boys, the tuition is killing me. I know I have to prove that the public school is unable to provide what they need-which to me is obvious since my 13 yo tests above average intelligence and almost failed 7th grade. They refused to do a 504 for him because “if we make it any easier for him, he’ll just get lazier”. We had an IEP for my LD 11yo, but it wasn’t usually followed. They told me that he needs to be an advocate for himself. Like a shy LD 9 or 10 yo can challenge an adult. And it was a full time job for me to keep after them. SO, what do I do next?
Re: paying for private education
I empathize with you and have heard this lament many, many times as an Admissions Director at a private school for LD students. My best advice to you would be to contact and Educational Consultant or Advocate to help direct you through the process. They know the process, the players, and the programs and can save you a world of frustration and dead ends. To locate one you can contact The Independent Educational Consultants Association by phone at 703.591.4850 or by e-mail a [email protected].
You are your child’s best advocate KEEP IT UP! I admire your tenacity. E-mail me and keep me posted on your progress.
