I am pretty sure it is legal for a parent to tape record IEP meetings, but wanted to check here. My dd’s upcoming meeting is going to cover the results of 4 evaluations and I know I will forget important information. I once had an incident in the past where I could have sworn we agreed on something and then did not find it on the report (IEP) from that meeting. Admittedly I am too engrossed, anxious and have my own ADD issues to take good notes while people are talking. I usually do have a list with me of points I want to make sure are covered. Is it advisable to bring a tape recorder to the meeting?

FYI -
You need to bring a battery operated tape recorder they can stop you from plugging it in.
Yes, you can tape meetings but you need to give prior notice to the school. In my state I know that everyone has to agree to the taping before the meeting. You could state this as an accommodation under 504 for your ADD. This would make it discrimanatory if they refused.
Another option would be to request a notetaker or court reporter. You can also bring a friend who could take notes for you or an advocate.
Good luck!
