19 Yr Old LD son

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I am the mother of a 19 Yr old LD son. My son has mild learning disabilities in math and written language. He wanted to go to college, but because of his math disability, was not accepted at either of his two choices (colleges close to home). He tried community college and really did not like the community college setting at all (not like real college) and failed both courses he signed up for. For the past year, he has been renovating an old house for a relative and worked very hard at this project. This project has ended and he is at the next phase of life - finding a job. The problem is, he is not actively involved in finding a job. I know he is not lazy, but it seems that he is in denial about the next steps to take. I wanted to go with him to fill out applications at various jobs where they require an onsite application to be completed, but he did not want to go. We tried VocRehab in our area and met with a counselor and after 5 calls, never got to the next phase in this process. I am very frustrated and need help. He has never given my husband or I any problems. He is a good son, but we’re not sure how to handle this problem. Need help and guidance. We live in VT and have limited resources.
