30% ADD

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

According to our evaluation with the pediatrician, he only shows ADD at 30% and he says its not enough to medicate. He wants to avoid meds to because it could possibly aggravate the anxiety. Any thoughts?

I have ADHD, I also have anxiety problems. The ADHD actually was a large cause of the anxiety. Wellburtin made it worse. Ritalin made both better. I have never heard of 30% ADD. It is always good to start w/o meds but I would recommend another opinion on this one.

Mamm:

You want to definately avoid medication if at all possible untill you get an idea what side effects could occur. A freind’s friend once forgot to take his medication, and he got behind the wheel of a car and went 40 miles per hour while making a right turn on a hilly road. He started talking to himself, he thought people were out to get him. Also, he started muttering he needed to obey the Lord. He also was giggling and running around in a public place singing on the radio. You really need to check these things out. Good luck to you.

And did he tell you what type of measure he used to get this 30%? In my experiences either you are or your not. I am interested as well in the responses you will be getting.

Dear Joe,

That doesn’t sound like a side effect of taking medication. It sounds like your freind is schizophrenic and when he didn’t take the medication his symptoms came back. I haven’t heard of any cases of ADD medication inducing psychotic symptoms.

Is that like being a little bit pregnant? I just dont get it, with ADHD syndromes I always thought you were are you weren’t. I would definetly get a second opinion, especially if this is from the same person who told you your son was PDD.

I would assume that the ped. means that your son scored at the 30th percentile on whatever instrument or combination of instruments (checklists, continuous performance tests, etc.). i.e. in the “normal” range. I would argue that there are degrees of ADHD (vs. you either “are” or “aren’t”) but I’ve never seen any references in professional literature to “percentages of ADHD”. “Not enough to medicate” to me would depend on the impact his symptoms have in his day to day life.

Your explanation makes sense to me and I imagine that is what he was trying to say. Thank you.
