Ok..I should have known better after reading this board for the past few months. Recently went for my 8yr ds’s first IEP meeting. I have a very good relationship with the school administration, so I felt pretty comfortable about not needing to take an advocate, or recording the meeting. We agreed on a good plan which was to include the summer school session which was to be exclusively the Wilson reading program. Well I found out today in a round about way, I have a friend who is an aid for the summer school teacher that will be doing the Wilson class, that my son’s name is not on the list. I then called his Spec Ed. teacher who is currently doing Wilson with him, she was shocked at first, and promises to find out what is going on. Then she stated well maybe he didn’t make the cut because of the numbers. I told her that as far as I am concerned that regular summer school is not appropriate for him, and I will not accept anything less than the Wilson instruction I was promised at his IEP meeting.
Since they wouldn’t write a “specific” program into his IEP, and I don’t have a witness or a recording, I’m not sure what to do next. I don’t see why they wouldn’t have to provide the same level of appropriate instruction that he has been receiving, just because of the numbers? If they can’t fit him in the school based program is it possible to get them to pay for his tutoring over the summer. I am planning to have a conversation with the V.P. tomorrow, I need some advice!!
This is a very big issue due to the fact we cancelled all vacation plans so he could attend this program. He also cried because he has to go to summer school and I promised him it was only going to be for Wilson to help with his reading.

Thanks for Socks. I was hoping you would respond. I’m going to draft my letter today, as well as, I have the phone# for a leading advocate in the area.
It occured to me after I left the post yesterday what might be behind this. Our school is being rezoned due to construction of a new school. We will be attending the new school in the fall. I am going to try and find out the # of kids that are in the program that are staying at the current school. I will not be suprised if the majority of the kids accepted in that class are staying. Since my son is attending the new school, he will no longer be their “problem” after summer school, and will not affect their SOL#’s next year. If this theory turns out to have some merit what type of leverage will this give me?

hmm,interesting. Not sure if it would give you any leaverage,but the school probably doesn’t either. In otherwords,if this does have merit,I would mention it. The school might change the story ,because someone knows the game plan,and how embarassing is that?
do NOT have a conversation without having a written response to present to the VP. Make sure you document what was promised at this meeting,document that they didn’t want to write the specific method,and then request formally an IEP meeting regarding the summer remedial program plans.Live and learn.
