My son (14) has been diagnosed with ADD. He is easily distracted, daydreams, “hates school” is bored etc. However he has never run around the room or been disruptive in any class or social situation. He is active in some sports but not excessively. Most adults think he is delieghtful and well-behaved. His grades are low but behavior good.
Are there non-stimulant meds that just help concentration or should I stick to 504 accomodations and an educational therapist?
Ross,
Strattera is a nonstimulant that research shows can help with the symptoms of inattention and mental impulsivity that are the hallmarks of inattentive ADHD. Stimulants are also appropriately used for inattentive ADHD. There need not be hyperactivity or overt impulsiveness for medications to be an effective treatment. Of course, if the symptoms can be managed well without medication, then medication never becomes an issue. My child with inattentive ADHD takes a stimulant medication that works well for him. On medication he has become an A student.
