ADD/Gifted Underachiever

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Hello.Has anyone had experinces with people not believing your child has both ADD and is gifted? Even friends?Neighbors you might have told with best intentions. Twisted jealousy.
For me, I can’t believe what challenges I am facing as a parent of such a child.
My son is 8 years old. A wonderful child.
Anyone care to share any bizarre experiences?
I feel like an outcast. I can only imagine what my son and his sister must be going through.
Pleaase share.
Thanks for listening.

The word “gifted” conjures up deep feelings in people. It has a feeling of being unfair and of offering a child special privileges. You’re brave to proudly offer the word to neighbors - it would be wonderful if all we could do was to be happy for other people but sometimes it’s hard to not feel jealous when nature bestows something on one wonderful child that it denies to another.

The world is not ready to understand that the child who can drive them nuts is likely smarter than them. I have a son who is ADHD/Gifted and LD so his grades are 99 and above until you hit Reding (his is a Visual Processing Deficit) and then he gets a 83. Now for most kids that is a great garde but for him it is spectacular-I get the “if he is so gifted he wouldn’t get any B’s”.

My advice, don’t tell anyone until your child accepts theri full scholarship to Princeton/Harvard/Yale/Duke.

I have found that the same people who question the “Twice Exceptional” label also questioned his ADHD diagnosis 3 years ago.
