Advice: "The Listening Test" and "Test of Problem Solving"

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

My daughter is 8 and attends 3rd grade at a private school. She has been having some difficulty with reading and writing and some apparent problems socially. We recently met with her teacher to discuss this and found that the school had brought in a speech-language pathologist to administer two tests, The Listening Test (linguisystems-1992) and Test of Problem Solving (linguisystems - 1984). The teacher presented us with a summary report of the results, which indicated a severe delay based on the Test of Problem Solving.

I have a number of questions about this. First, are schools permitted to arrange for this kind of testing without consulting with the parents first? I admit I was taken aback at being presented with the results after the fact. Second, are these particular tests “mainstream” tests in this area? (for example, I looked at the linguisystems web site and found that the Test of Problem Solving was updated in 1994 and wondered why the 1984 version would have been used instead). Is there any reason we should question or doubt the relevance of the tests and the results?

Before this came to our attention, we had been advised by an OT friend to have our daughter tested to see if there might be some identifiable causes for her reading, writing, and social difficulties. We had set this in motion already and are wondering whether the school’s test results would point us in the same or perhaps a different direction.

I am brand new to all of this and have had a little trouble following the lingo in some of the posts I’ve browsed, so if you do have any advice, please keep that in mind! Thanks.

The school should have notified you of any testing they wished to do. Testing without parental consent can be done but they have to have made an effort to get your consent.

I would question them on why their SLP (speech/language pathologist) chose to use out-dated tests.

Since they did not test in all educational domains, it is very likely that more thorough testing will bring you much more information. The information you have from this testing is likely only 1 piece of a larger puzzle. I would definitely go forward with any testing you have arranged.
