Another question re IEP for CAPD child

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

At my son’s IEP meeting I debated with the speech therapist that the new IEP should allow my son to be able to tape lessons. Like I said he has CAPD and also dysgraphia and dyspraxia as well as visual motor coordination weakness and that as he moves on in grades and is expected to take notes, he’ll need to tape lessons. This way he doesn’t have to take notes in class and miss information as he struggles to write, as well as listen and write.First, can I ask for an accommodation like this before he even needs it. He’s in the 4th grade now and I don’t anticipate that he’ll need to tape lessons until next year. She says she doesn’t think she can get that for me and that the teachers have a problem with being taped. IN addition she said that my son will be provided with study guides and won’t need to take notes.Am I being dupped or what? Do I need a 504 for something like this?Jackie

Jackie,If the accomodation is appropriate for your son, then it is an appropriate request. Keep at them until they get it for him. I have a hand out from the Minnesota Disablity Law Center, called “Modifications, Supplemental Aids and Services”, which lists “allowing student ot tape record assinments/ and homework” under both accomodations for assignments/homework and technology. If you are interested in this handout that lists numerous possible accomodations (not all are appropriate for every child, but they give good examples of what CAN be appropriate), they can be contacted at 1-800-292-4150.
