Answers finally!!!

We had our conference today to discuss the results of 4 hours worth of testing on my 6 1/2 year old daughter. She is definitely dyslexic with auditory processing and visual processing problems. They are all considered mild in severity. She is also bright (IQ 123), which is a bonus and not surprising. I’m really excited and relieved to have these answers. It is such a blessing to finally know what is wrong with my daughter. They say she *should* be able to learn how to overcome this.

So…here is our plan. She will attend an LD school in Dallas this summer for 6 weeks and also have speech therapy 3x a week. We don’t know which program she will be in yet. They have what they call their Scholars program which is a remedial reading writing and spelling program for LD students. It is 2 hours of one on one tutoring in Alphabetic Phonics followed by one hour of auditory discrimination training in small groups. There is a waiting list for this program, so we may not get in. We are really praying that we get into this one.

As a second choice, she will attend their summer school program for kids entering 1st grade. It is 3 hours too and uses a montessori approach which covers pratical life, sensorial, oral and written language, math, literature and social skills. So, it is a little more academic. They use the SEE program w/ emphasis on auditory discrimination, phonics and handwriting.

Does anyone have experience with this SEE program? It is listed here on LDonline. I think it may be a program exclusive to this private school?

I don’t know what we will do in the fall. We will see how much progress she makes, how she likes the school, see how we handle the 1 hour drive before we make any decisions. We are severely limited by living in a small town that has virtually no resources for providing appropriate intervention here. Even when the school district does provide dyslexia education (3rd grade), it is not enough…they are pulled out for a few minutes several times a week. Really, really a shame. I could fight it, but like someone said, she’d be graduating from high school before I forced the school district to make any major changes. Once I have some time to concentrate on it, I may make this my mission with the public school system. Also, there are no private tutors in this area that we could hire privately. I’m really stuck. Thank God that I am a stay at home mom and that we have the resources to take her somewhere else.
