FALLBROOK – The National Dyslexia Research Foundation is hosting an art exhibit featuring works by dyslexic artists through Feb. 16 at the Art and Cultural Center here.
“We’re holding it so that people will take a look at dyslexia and realize that dyslexics have abilities just like anyone else,” said Stoney DeMent, one of the foundation’s literacy directors. “Just because the literate world says you have to read, write and spell or you’re stupid – that isn’t true.”
The foundation says there is a direct correlation between dyslexia and artistic ability.
“The same differences in dyslexics’ brain functions that make it hard for them to read and write seem to afford them superior creativity and the ability to visualize three-dimensional and abstract concepts and spatial relationships with uncanny clarity,” Ed Paker, the art show’s coordinator, wrote in a booklet promoting the exhibit.
A sampling of all types of artwork will be displayed, including photos by DeMent, a retired high school principal; sculptures by Mary Buckman, a professional artist whose work is displayed in collections throughout the United States and Europe; and Phil Yeh, creator of the Winged Tiger comic book series.
The show is open daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free.
Visitors can meet the artists at a free reception from 5 to 8 p.m today at the cultural center, 103 S. Main St.

Re: gifts of many kinds
Angela,
Glad to hear it! We are starting a custom home up in Del Mar and I am now driving up that way every now and again. The view is still fantastic!
Andy
Andy, you’ll be happy to know that the Winston School had a display of student art at this exhibit. Our son, who never had any real success in art at the public school, has two creative pieces in the exhibit. His adjustment to Winston has been great and we are all breathing a sigh of relief. The exhibit had a variety of media and we met a couple of the artists. Very cool!
