Asperger Syndrome

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I am desperate to find a support or organize a support group for parents of children with Asperger Syndrome, in the Lake Wales area. Is there one out there? Are there other parents of an AS kid near me? My son, 14, recently diagnosed, FINALLY!!!

I’d also like to just find other parents out there to talk to about this subject and our children.

Can’t help you with your local area, but here is possibly the best site for Aspies online:

www.udel.edu/bkirby/asperger/

Asperger’s is likely to occur in 1-2 per 1,000 children, so depending upon how big your area is, you areprobably not alone. Online will probabl get you into contact with other parents much quicker tho.

I also suggest you meet a few adults with Asperger’s online as well. But please, remember that for many of them society has been very cruel, so always mind your manners and give them a little leeway (recall that social grace is not their strong point.)

I can honestly say I have learned as much about autism that is useful in helping my boy from my conversations and interactions with adults on Spectrum as I have learned from the PhD’s ;)

Good luck to you.

I know there is an organization called OASIS , not sure of the web site. Also there are some web sites about NonVerbal Learning Disabilities that also speak to many AS issues. www.nldline.com to name one.
