Can anyone tell me what kinds of things you can do for a child that is almost 5to improve weak auditory memory skills (short term memory)?
The child is very strong visually and seems to remember things well long term a
fter they have been pacticed. Is auditory memory a subtype of CAPD? Is a problem with short term memory best diagnosed by an audiologist that specializes in CAPD testing? What kinds of things should be in an IEP for a SLP to work on with a child that still has another year before entering kindergarten? Is it necessary for the child to work with an SLP or can time be better served working with the child at home? This child has been in speech therapy for 2 years and has made considerable improvements in her speech-language skills but appears to have an underlying problem with weak auditory memory skills as evidenced by difficulty repeating a series of words or digits.
Because she has been getting speech and language services as much as 3-4 times a week plus going to preschool she has not had much time for playdates or other fun activities that other children are able to participate in. This has become a concern for the parents. Thanks in advance for any information or experiences you might be able to share.
It can be a subtype of CAPD and/or ADD. In the Buffalo CAPD model it’s catagorized as Tolerance Fading Memory - this is the subtype most confused with ADD and misdiagnosed as ADD.
Basically, if you don’t have good attention, then it can effect your short term memory deficit. With CAPD, this can happen because of noise distractions, unable to differeniate background noise etc - it’s a maturation of the Central Auditory Nervous System. My dd has this problem and had extremely poor auditory memory at age 5.
See my post below on Tomatis for what we have done to address. My child was 5 at the time- this has been a major emphasis area for us over the last 2 years.
