Auditory Processing

My 7-year-old daughter has mild to moderate auditory processing problems, especially auditory memory. She also has trouble with oral communication, i.e. gathering her thoughts and communicating them clearly. The speech and language therapist at her school said that Earobics would be helpful. Someone through this website suggested that Fast ForWordwould be better for the types of problems she’s having. We’ve looked into Fast ForWord and discovered that it is extremely expensive($4,800) and hasn’t been proven to have long-term effectiveness. Does anyone have experience with Fast ForWord?
Has it been helpful for auditory processing problems? Has anyone found any other software or programs that would be particularly helpful for auditory
processing?

FFW is expensive but not that expensive if you do it yourself. I did and it wasn’t difficult. The cost then is about $850 I think. The additional costs on top of that is for it to be done by someone else.

Earobics is good but isn’t basic enough for some kids, lincluding my son. You might try and see how far you can get on it before making a decision. My son’s auditory memory moved into low normal after FFW and his receptive language skills dramatically improved. He suddenly could evavesdrop!

We looked at Fast Forward for our daughter and decided against it because her Auditory Processing problems were minimal. I think the program is more helpful to those with moderate to serious auditory problems, so that is something you may want to ask….How severe does an Auditory Processing problem have to be to have Fast Forward to be effective?

Hi. My daughter did Fastforward and even followed it up with Orthon Gillingham tutoring. I found very little if any improvement for the $1800 I spent to do it at home with my daughter. By the way Scientific Learning is the Fastforward company. An inexpensive alternative that several of my daughter’s tutors recommended is cognitive concepts cd roms, Earobics. (847)-328-8099. They are fun and very inexpensive and also benefit phonological awareness, auditory processing, phonics and linguistic concepts. I hope they help.
