I am back…checking in…Been kinda busy with assessments out my ears. You asked about Auditory Processing and ADHD co-morbidity..
I have come across one of my nightmares…in high school…a kid who had been treated for ADHD as a little guy, had FFW when he was younger…then wasn’t treated for ADHD after that…and wallah…this kiddo is now in 9th grade and he has STALLED…with his langauge, reading, you name it he is a flatliner on the TOAL….The ADHD was never treated…and he has some auditory issues too.
My DD never had FFW…we did LMB we did meds and she is doing well..but the CAPD and ADD will never go away we have to live with that the rest of our life…The CAPD we treat with hearing aids and ALD’s and the ADD we use meds…
I still stand by the co-morbidity issues…..You treat the ADHD and the CAPD won’t be as bad. You don’t want to mess around with not treating ADHD especially when I see kids like I am seeing…Those who weren’t treated for ADD but were treated for CAPD but it wasn’t enough… and now they are behind the eight ball and then some.
I just want to cry because my DD was in the same boat years ago but we did something about it and treated the underlying causes we didn’t put our head in the sand and hope it would just go away.
I have a young man in SSR who has the book upside down when he is supposed to be reading…this kid is so busted!!! I just hope I can make a dent and I am afraid it is too little and too late….
Brooklea…treat the ADHD…have her listen to books on tapes, train her auditory memory that way…but treat the ADD…you won’t be sorry.
LMB
Lindamood Bell Learning Processes…Lindamood-Phonemic Sequencing Programme LIPS, Visualizing and Verbalizing, Seeing Stars, we did Somonas for a little while…we did PACE, we did Earobics, we did Read Naturally for Reading Fluency. But when we got her meds right things just started coming together after years and years of stalling…
The books on tape or read naturally will build up her ability to listen and process what she hears better, thus building up her auditory memory. A CAPD specialist and I would use Read Naturally in a private practice to build up clients auditory memory. It worked really well.
Another hot topic in the States is Social/Cognitive Therapy….the SLP who is the GURU of this movement is in San Jose and her name is Michelle Garcia Winner. She has lots of great ideas and therapy treatments to help kids like your daughter make it in life. I suggest you check out her website http://www.socialthinking.com/
Ask your SLP if she knows anything about her social thinking programmes. IF she doesn’t she needs to get on the bandwagon. My district sent me to Michelle Garcia Winner’s workshops so I could be more effective with secondary students who have ADHD, Autism and non-compliant behaviors. Her ideas are fabulous, real life and man do they work….One of her books I have is called Thinking about you and thinking about me…You may want to order some of her books and read about ways you can help your daughter because it sounds like you are in this for the long haul. I know Michelle’s books have helped me as a parent and also help me understand how to better cope with my own struggles with ADHD. Good luck!!!
Re: auditory processing information
thanks pattim!!!
once again you have been an excellent source of information…
:D
thanks pattim!!
dd is seeing a speech path at school on fridays at school - not sure if i like her - very pushy - pressured me to get her tested for auditory processing difficulties..
but if she can help, why not!!
dd is always seeing a psyche at school, and he is working through some of her issues too..
am treating the adhd but there seems to be little to no improvement.. some days are great, others are horrendous..
question: what is lmb??
thanks for the tip of listening to books - how does it train the brain??
