Beth in FL-- question for you

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Sorry if you see this twice — I’m having trouble getting this message to post. I can’t
get this idea of interactive metronome out of my head — I’ve read the website and info and it really seems like it is exactly what my son needs. Would you mind telling me more about it…like:

how long did it take to complete the program? How long was each session and how many sessions per week?

you said your son was 9 — I don’t get how a 9 year old could accomplish the same coordination tasks as high school students? My son is only 7 1/2 and in first grade but the web site says they do it on children as young as 6. His primary diagnosis is motor delay although you wouldn’t notice it now.

did you see benefits right away or not until he finished? again don’t see how my son could possibly achieve the same level as a 16 year old (I’m thinking of the website examples)

you said it helped with attention — did you see any other benefits..like fine motor, speech or processing?

We’re considering doing a LMB intensive this summer (his testing showed that he needs LiPS/SI as well as V/V) but I think he’d get more out of it if we did IM and FF first but can’t figure out how to get it all done by end of May!

Thanks for any help you can give me. My son’s LMB scores were so low — it was very discouraging.

Your son is young so you shouldn’t be discouraged.

We didn’t do LMB until my son was 11 (last summer). He got through the entire SS program in four weeks which I think is quite unusual from what they told me. I attribute it to all the therapy we have done.

He scores in the 2 % on one of LMB programs which V and V is supposed to help. He is doing fine just the same, although I would like to do V and V. So don’t get too concerned with test scores.

You can’t do FFW, IM, and LMB in the same summer.

We did FFW first (after first grade) and IM after third.

IM is measured in standard ways so that it is comparable across children of different ages. I know that people on this board who have put 6 year olds through the program thought it was too young.

We did not see any results until after he finished. He finished up in the summer so we didn’t have school. He did copy a page (post test) which he could not do before IM. Output improvements with handwriting along with attention were the most striking results.

It also helped with coordination. I saw a big difference on the soccer field!! We were able to get through word retrieval exercises that he had hit a wall on after IM. Most people would consider this part of auditory processing or language processing. We had done Neuronet before IM and returned to it afterwards. The two programs compliment each other and I have no doubt the vestibular work we did with NN contributed to my son’t success.

He did the standard 15 session program which was five weeks of three sessions a week (hour sessions).

I’ve read through the NeuroNet website and it certainly makes sense to me. Sounds a lot like the sort of things I did through NACD. I just CAN”T do another program at home, although I can certainly see that that sort of thing would address his underlying issues.
My plan at this point is to finish Fast Forward starting immediately. We did the 50 minute version through a speech path and weren’t able to finish because he was doing it at 6 p.m. (after school and an hour of Wilson tutoring — it was toooo much!).
This time I’m going to pull him out of school for that hour in order to get it done prior to summer.
I’d still like to try IM but I couldn’t pull him out for that too. I might wait until May and try it after school in place of the tutor for that month and then the two weeks of summer before we start LMB. I wonder if he would benefit if he wasn’t able to finish the program? Or maybe if he just was able to do it 30 min instead of the hour? Is it the sort of thing you could do summer after summer?
I hope we’re able to get in a lot of V/V this summer but we’ll have to see. They recommended 8 weeks so we’ll be there almost the whole month of June and July. They said we need LiPS/SI first to solidify his reading before we do V/V. I was surprised that his reading/phonetic scores were as low as they were — his teacher and tutor think he’s doing great reading wise. We had several 1%’s though. Word attack was his only average score :(
I appreciate your input!
