Biofeedback

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Has anyone tried biofeedback for ADD or LD? I have been doing some searches on this approach and there seems to be quite a few studies that support the use of this technique. It certainly is widely used.

I have a psych in my area who has been doing it for 30 years with claimed “great success.” I would have to think that if he has been able to stay in business that long he must be achieving some level of success.

I really am interested in pursuing approaches that cure this problem rather than treating the problem with meds. I have seen some significant improvement with my son as a result of interactive metronome and it has given me hope that therapies that stimulate the brain can work on a child whose problem is less than severe.

I think neurofeedback works. That is, if a child really has ADHD which can be clinically documented through an EEG. I happened to meet an educational psychologist from Ohio who treats kids with ADHD with neurofeedback and gets excellent results. I also know of several practitioners in Maryland. The clinician really needs to know what he/she is doing. You don’t want somebody who just bought the equipment and is fooling around. It takes a great depth of knowledge of brain function.

Thanks Linda,

We have one of the pioneers of biofeedback living one mile from my house. I researched him on the web and he is pretty much considered the authority in this area.

Thanks so much for the input. My gut tells me this is an avenue to try. I probably won’t start until Jan when I will have a new insurance company and hopefully have coverage for this issue.

I read on an earlier post about you trying the interactive metronome. I looked it up and it looks very similiar to the nuerofeedback unit. I havent tried yet, my insurance is changing in January and I will be pursueing it then. There is also a unit called Play Attention. I think they are all the same theory, just different people behind them. I am in GA and there is only a couple of people that do that training. We will have to drive a ways. Check out http://www.adhd-biofeedback.com/. Dr. Bate leases the units and you can do it in the privacy of your own home. For as long as you need it. You can buy one for 2500.00 and then rented it out or sell it when you are done. My sister used it with her autistic son and she was really happy with the results. There is a lot of info about allergies and food sensitivities on his web site. I had found that removing sugar ( as much as possible) make the world of difference in my son. I had also restricted to his diet what we call color coded. He is allergic to anything red. Natural or Artificial. So he can not have red white or blue foods. That is just a way for him to remember. Reds because of the dyes, white with one exception that I dont have to worry about - cauliflower. LOL and I could not think of 1 blue food item that could be good for him so we just call it the red white and blue diet. The worse years of our life, he was eating cereal for breakfast and usually speghettios for dinner. He also had white flecks on his finger nails. This is a defeciency in zinc. A good vitamin mineral supplement is always good too.
