Brain Gym?

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Has anyone tried Brain Gym with their kids? I searched back for 180 days and only found a couple of references to it.

I found a local provider (I don’t have to do it alone, yeah!) and it seems very affordable and reasonable. After looking at their website, and speaking with the instructor, it sounds almost like a set of relaxation techniques to keep anxiety from interfering with learning. We’re doing this before we do some of the more intensive therapies, with the hope that this will allow my son (anxiety disorder) to access the more intensive therapies with less frustration.

We use Brain Gym exercises in our public school intensive (one to one) program. Some students have taken their favorites back with them to class and their teachers have learned. We use them mostly to ease transitions, refocus attention and refresh thinking skills needed for the reading and writing lessons our students are working on. It is a good thing.

My daughter had 1 session. When we left she asked, “Mom, do you think that lady was trying to trick our mind?” Thought that was interesting. Neither she nor I felt good about it.

There is something to it…and it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to learn to do it either..It is a relaxation type of therapy but it doesn’t remediate…it gets the child to to be able to focus so they can learn.

My evaluator has “gone over the edge” with it. It’s the cure to everything, i.e, reminds me of the “snake oil” of yesteryear. Actually told me I could STOP all remediation; however, when I repeated what she said, she started backing up.

I understand the relaxation - I could use it b/a some IEP meetings.

All of it isn’t relaxation. I have a friend who had an OT “prescribe” some of the exercises. I got the book and used them with my son before we started Neuronet therapy. The ones I was doing work on integrating various areas of the brain—the same thing Neuronet therapy does more exactly.

Funny Leah, you daughter doesn’t strike me as the type who needs to do relaxation type exercises. She seems pretty sure of herself and doesn’t seem to be anxious.
I wonder if it isn’t just the wrong treatment for your situation.
I agree some “experts” just know what they know. Children are different and need different things.

There is a book - I haven’t ordered it, yet, since I’m waiting to schedule with the instructor and see what she says we need. Their site is:
