I was wondering if anyone could tell me if they have had any experience where IQ tests on a young child was effected by multiple learning disabilities. My son who is seven has receptive and language delays. Auditory Processing, ADHD, gross and fine motor delays to name a few. He has made large progress in the last year but is still about 1 1/2 year behind. Any replies will be great. We are trying to find some answers and find the best placement for our son.
Of course all this affects his IQ score — how could you avoid affecting it? He needs receptive language to understand IQ test questions and instructions, expressive language to answer questions and to express any difficulties he has, and coordination plus vision to do the non-verbal performance tasks. The poor kid is really in a bind here.
IQ scores are always subject to re-evaluation considering other factors, and you have a bunch of other factors here. I would consider any score you get to be an estimation.
I can’t say much about placement —my first thought would be to try to find programs, either school or home, that work on the language and physical skills before a lot of academic pressure. However if you can find someone who will tutor reading step-by-step from a skills perspective, that can actually help language development.
