Has anyone ever heard of this program? It’s being used in my son’s school for reading lab. The full name is Computer Curriculum Corp. Reading Program.
My son is in 5th grade with a reading level of 2nd grade.
I looked it up and it said that this program is used in Title 1 schools for comprehension. I am totally confused. What is a Title 1 school?
Help!!!!
Re: Answers
Hmmm, I wonder if this school is a Title 1. The aftercare program where my son will be getting to Reading Lab mentioned that I had to fill out a form about receiving free lunch.
Another question, he will be getting reading 2x a day on the computer. He is in 5th grade and can only read 2 grade level…Do you think this program will help in reading? His math is OK.
Thanks mj

Without observing your child during reading activities, I could not say where his specific reading issues lie. However, I’ll bet it’s decoding because most classroom teachers instruct using more whole word (look/say) methods. Teachers are trained fairly well in reading comprehension, but most are poorly prepared to teach decoding skills.
Computers do not replace effective, direct instruction. They don’t give the same kind of reflective, multi-directional feedback that a human can provide. As I said, though, they are good for rote-skill learning to automaticity. Math facts are a good example. They are also good for solidifying previously introduced concepts as long as feedback is immediate (which it is with most programs).

Yes, my son’s school used it and our middle school uses it. It is a great practice tool (and the math segment has shown effective for math fact learning); however, nothing replaces direct instruction. Computers can enhance learning by giving more practice time and therefore speeding up the process to automaticity…as long as the child is ready for the level on which they are working. CCC controls the levels and won’t let one work way ahead.

A Title I school is one in which the majority (some percentage like 60%—someone may know exactly how many) of the students receive free & reduced lunch. The school qualifies for extra staff funding for reading assistance for every child in the school.
In my school district, we have several Title I schools. One of them, I’m proud to say, beat out the rich-kids school for top testing honors. Having extra teacher is a help!
