Connected math program

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Hi. Recently our school system introduced a new math program called, “Connected Math”. My 7th grade son with LD is having a terrible time. His last two grades were an “F” and “D+” with an aide in the classroom and accommadations. Does anyone else have any information about this math program and the LD child. (Or experience?) I have another meeting coming up soon and would like to make some recommendations. Both my son and I are very frustrated!

The strength of Connected Math are the hands on and very age appropriate activities. I didn’t think that I would like the program but have come around. It IS language intensive which is a problem for language LD kids. The concept of the program is that there is a hands on math activity and then questions about the activity. It is not possible to do the questions with out the data from the activity. Is your child bringing home his binder everyday? without the binder with the data from the activity, the discussion and the sample questions done in class- it is hard to the homework.. check the binder. usually keeping a great binder is a big part of the grade. I’m not a total fan of the tests that go with this series but they do follow the additional questions the end of the chapter - so make sure he’s been doing the homework.. There are not a lot of problems assigned but the questions all need lengthy explanations- the point of the program.

Thanks for the insight. A big part of the problem is the binder. My son has trouble with organization and does not do well with far point copying. Although I check his binder each night it is often impossible for me to decipher!

I find that the program relies too heavily on previously learned concepts. When you have a child with LD, concepts often are not retained and need to be constantly retaught. By the time my son “gets it” it is time to move on and he is lost again.

Both he and I are very frustrated. I question a program where a child is failing even with an IEP and accomadations.

I appreciate your feedback. I hope that this program works because the alternative is that he will have missed a couple of years of math.
