Did you know that your child had ADD/ADHD?
Our daughter dx with dyslexia and APD this past spring. We also had her K teacher fill out Brown’s Scale and it came back with nothing. Her teacher said that she saw no problem whatsoever with her focus in class. She had perfect behavior at school. My SIL, who is also a teacher says that dd doesn’t act like her ADD students. When DH and I filled it out, about 2/3 of the questions were either a middle score or above. We kind of blew it off thinking she must just be acting this way at home. At home, she is loud, impulsive and gets caught up in something and can’t stop and spirals out of control.
We met with the principal of her new school who interviewed us about our dd. She said, without even meeting her, that she fits the profile of dyslexic/ADD. She has been in summer school at the private LD school for 3 weeks. I received a note from her teacher that keeping focused has been a challenge for her. I know what is coming next, a request from the school to have her evaluated for ADD.
So. who should be diagnosing simple cases of ADD? I asked our pediatrician today and she said that she evaluates for ADD/ADHD all of the time. I’m kind of leery that she doesn’t take these things very seriously. She’s a friend of mine and she’s made some awful ignorant comments about dyslexia already. I’ve always heard to go to a psychiatrist or other specialist. Any suggestions for picking out someone to dx her? I think I want someone independent of the private LD school.
Thanks!!

Mayleng,
How did you find a neuro pyschologist? How do tell if he/she is any good?
Thanks

Barb, mainly through recommendations, and asking around. In Buffalo we have a Children’s hospital, and they have a Neuropsych on staff, who is very well thought off. I had to wait 8 months for an appointment, but could not wait so my son’s Ped’s recommended another Psych. You can meet the Psych and talk to him and see how you feel about him before sending your child. Some are more well known than others especially when you start talking to parents that have sent their kids for testing.
Suzi, although my son’s Peds dx the ADD/inattentive, I wanted a second opinion, so he is now being evaluated by a Neuro Pyschologist, they will not only evaluate for ADD but also any Lds.
Get a reputable one, ask around, if there is a children’s hospital in your area check with them.
