We are using the daytrana patch for our older son. We had originally tried 15 mg of focalin xr. Since it was making him tired, the doctor prescribed a 10 mg daytrana patch. The 10 mg had no side effects, but we felt it was not strong enough.

Last week the doctor bumped up his prescription to 15 mg. The first day on it he was tired and said he had a stomach ache. So the next day I had him wear the patch for a shorter time. That was much better. The third day I had him wear it a little longer. His side effects seemed to go away. Then yesterday I made a mistake. He wore the patch way too long because I was at work. He was very tired and had a stomach ache when he woke up this morning. In fact I am home from work because of it.

I am going to give him a break from it for a day or two, then start him out wearing it 4 hours, then bump it up slowly over the next 10 days, as I am on vacation and can monitor it better.

My other son has been taken 20 mg focalin xr for about a year and a half with very good results and basically no side effects; however, I like the patch so much I may switch him to that as well.

You have a lot more control over the medication. Sometimes on the weekends my son sleeps in. Sometime he needs the medication on the weekend because he has schoolwork to do. If I give the focalin too late, it will keep him up at night. However, with the patch you can put it on and remove it a couple hours before bedtime.
