I happened to be at Best Buy the other day and came across an inexpensive ($9.99!) computer reading program that seems pretty good. It’s called Phonic Reading by Simply Media (www.simplymedia.com) and according to the back of the package it’s based on Orton Gillingham methods. My Son tried it tonight and he liked it. It has a nice variety of games (I think it’s around 15 different ones at three different levels). There’s even directionaltiy exercises with letters like “b,d” which need to be sorted, and then get more difficult as letters are added (i.e. lb, ld).
But best of all, I noticed this program works on automatic recognition of words (orthographic patterns). And, it’s not “babyish.”
