Does anyone know anything regarding DHA and its effect on improving attention. I read an article on DHA but I fail to find someone who has tried that avenue.
DHA supplementation
Hi Vali,
You are right about DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), there have been studies showing it is beneficial to kids with attention issues. The problem is that DHA is relatively unstable in isolation, can go rancid rapidly, and is therefore difficult to supplement in isolation. It also seems to need certain cofactors to be properly absorbed and utilized by the body, as we are discovering is true of many vitamins and minerals. Your best bet would be to get it as part of a whole food supplement, such as fish oil or blue-green algae; the latter is also helpful to AD/HD kids in many other ways: it leaves an alkaline residue in the intestines (being vegetable based), is high in protein (almost 60%) including all the essential amino acids, high in EFA’s (Omega 3 and Omega 6), highly assimilable, rich in antioxidants, etc. You should also consider supplementing with enzymes and probiotics first and/or alongside it, though, to make sure any toxins that are washed out from the body are eliminated promptly.
Here is some info on DHA and blue-green algae (Aphanizomenon flos-aqua):
EPA’s & DHA:
“Not least, microalgae are considered to be the primary source of
unsaturated fatty acids in the food chain.” Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA)
and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) are two relatively rare and valuable fatty acids found in microalgae. The reason that fish oils are so rich in
polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) is that microalgae are abundant in
their food chain. Unlike seafood, microalgal oils are cholesterol free.
The nutritional value and therapeutic merits of PUFAs have been widely
documented.”
