Dictation/Transcription machine for dysgraphic student?

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Has anyone has success with this kind of approach? This is for a student who has lots of ideas and can organize thoughts, but who has difficulty with handwriting, typing, and mechanics (grammar, punctuation, spelling). The family is not interested in speech recognition software.

Do you mean a dictaphone? Unless you hire a typist, it wouldn’t be much use. Perhaps you could explore some of the typing programs that are designed for teaching LD or otherwise disabled children. Voice-activated word-processing is not much good for children, but a dictaphone solution will not give this kid the skills he needs for later. How many secretaries out there are still taking dictation or typing out the bosses’ tapes?
