Hello,
On March 6th I arrived at my son’s school at 7:55am to drop off my 7 yr old daughter. I have a 5 yr old son with Epilepsy he has an IEP because of fine motor and speech delays. I went in and tryed to find my son and couldn’t find him in the class room or in the cafateria eating breakfast. By this time it was 8:05 there were kids playing in his classroom and children eating breakfast at this time. I found my son sitting in the office with his coat and hat on. The agreement with the school was that the bus will pick him up at 7:45 am so he could eat. It usually takes 20-30 minutes for him to eat a bowl of cereal because he has a problem with his hands. His hair was soaked with sweat and I was not happy. I told the principal that I was going to take him down so he could get his breakfast her reply was “I don’t know if they are ready for him”. I have no idea what that means. I had his IEP in Nov-01 and at that time I asked for an aide for him. The school refused because it would cost too much money to have a personal aide for him. I am going to the school in the morning and request once again another IEP for my son. Would this be a case of discrimination? I would think so seeing that the other kids were eating and playing and my son was sitting in the office being the official ” Office Greeter”.
I did ask what time does my son goto breakfast on a typical day and the secretary told me between 8:10am and 8:15am. He is at school at 7:50am every day.
Thank You,
Pam

That really bothers me. And if your son needs an aide, then it’s too bad for the district. You need to pursue it and if you feel strongly that he needs one and they refuse, you need to look into mediation. (This is the step before due process).
