finding a tutor

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

for you more experienced parents, how do I go about finding a tutor to help my child learn his own way to study, do homework and test successfully. I have tried helping myself and found I am not a very good teacher.

I called the county ed office and spoke with the head of the reading program. She was able to reccommend a dynamite teacher who was an experienced tutor due to a divorce, 3 kids and lousy teacher salary. She was business-like, 45 minutes like clockwork and effective. She used bits and pieces of different strageties/programs depending on the individual child-something I would really look for in a tutor. The reading recovery teacher I used the year before was a washout.

If you find someone really good -they will be busy. You may have to supplement with someone ‘cool’ eg a college kid who can follow the note-taking, study procedures set up by the tutor.

Good luck

I have toyed with the idea of putting an add in the local paper requesting a tutor trained in some very specific programs I have heard about on this board like step up to writing or lindamood bell seeing stars. I think I will do this for the summer.

I think those programs are what he needs right now and I just need to get someone else to help him for awhile. I am just a little tired and need a break.

If you can pinpoint specific programs that really work for your child’s specific issues you could look for someone trained in those programs.

There are wonderful teachers who don’t need special programs but that becomes something of gamble because you just never know.
