First part of IEP

Hi all,

I am totally confused!! My daughter is 5 she turned 5 the end of October so she is young. She is in kindergarden this year and has some dificulties in speach and expression. I had her tested through our local school district she goes to private school at the moment. The only testing they will do for a kindergardener is speech. So we did that and she has problems, so I’m going to request a Audiologist to test her?? Whatever that does…and then she is also having some more testing done before the end of the school year. I have enrolled her in public school for 1st grade so she can get the extra help she needs.

Anyone else have this speech expressive problem? and what have you done about it?

She also has terrible alligeries and hugh tonsils which I cannot get the doc to take out. I’m taking her to the doc tomorrow for new alligery medicine so well see…Anything anyone can tell me would be great!!!!!!!!

Also my neice has a Auditory processing problem and I’m wondering if this is something that runs in families?

Thanks

Speech and language therapy can be done for a child with expressive language problems. I would suggest doing lots of nursery rhymes and reading books until she can mimic your intonation, this will build up her auditory memory. Also talking with her about everything, what you are doing and why you are doing it, how you are feeling, etc.. I would suggest taking her to an ENT to look at the tonsils and adenoids. These can contribute to speech and language delays due to frequent ear infections and also increased pressure in the middle ear which would cause a decrease in her hearing acuity.
