Flaxseed oil is not a cure for ADHD at all; flaxseed oil will not match what the ADHD meds (the central nervous system stimulants/alerting agents) can do.

With flaxseed oil, it’s best to use a high quality grade which contains flaxseed oil (vs one where flaxseed oil is just one ingredient out of many others).

That’s my understanding.

Certainly none of the nutritional supplements are a replacement for stimulant medication. But I have read the literature that some children’s attention is improved with essential fatty acid supplements. Figured it couldn’t hurt, and has many other positive qualities. Thanks!

Essential fatty acids are very important for brain function. I don’t think flaxseed oil is the most efficient way to get them. High grade marine fish oils are much better. I recommend reading Dr. Jacqueline Stordy’s book (go to drstordy.com for more info) and going to web sites for Nordic Naturals fish oil supplements and Equazen supplements.

I agree with LindaW— you’ll probably get farther with Omega 3 than flaxseed oil. We’ve had some luck with it— very subtle improvements noticed, and I can’t stress “very subtle” enough. It will not be even close to the improvements you’ll get with medication, and you may not be able to notice any difference at all. It works enough for me that I continue to use it as a supplement, in addition ot medication. I think it does less for my son, but he says he feels better taking it with his medication. It can’t hurt you, and it may help.

I agree that Flaxseed is not the best source. Because the good stuff yasye so bad the flaxseed is easier to give to kids.

We finished our first bottle of flax seed oil, so I bought a blend of flax seed and fish oils. The kids don’t like it as much, but are taking it. It really does stink. Ah well.
