I got a great book for Christmas, I can’t put it down.
It’s called “The Secret Life of the Dyslexic Child” by Robert Frank, Ph.d. (2002 by the Philip Lief Group, Inc.) www.rodalestore.com. Must be fairly new, haven’t seen it before.
It is a first-hand account of living with dyslexia. Despite his disability (contrary to the beliefs of many of his nay-sayers) he is a successful adult professional!!!!
It is wonderful and it is a “dead-on” description of my boys. With the older one, I kept getting different diagnoses: NVLD, PDD, Asperger’s because according to these professionals who diagnosed my son, dyslexia just means a problem with reading. Its only a piece of his problem. I had the gut feeling that they where wrong about my son. Now I have some piece of mind or an exact clone of my son out there.
According to Dr. Frank, everything that I been telling these people and they diagnose as another kind of disability to add to the list, is ALL ABOUT BEING DYSLEXIC!!!
So, now I can stop worrying that there is something horribly wrong with my oldest (especially). Dr. Frank has all of the same issues we are dealing with right now and he actually survived!!!
He gives activities and accounts of what it feels like to be dyslexic; he feels the most important thing we can do for these kids to to truly understand WHAT they go through in their heads (empathy always goes a long way). He then gives strategies for providing appropriate support based in that understanding.
Can’t say enough about the book other than get a copy for yourself. You won’t be sorry if you are struggling with the same issues.
