My 10 year old daughter has been diagnosed with a Generalized Thyroid Hormone Resistance condition. I understand that this condition is extremely rare. Fortunately, she does not appear to have any physical repercusions related to the disease. She does however have ADD and a non-verbal learning disability.
From the limited information I can find on GTHR, there appears to be a very strong correlation between the two conditions. Our Pediatric Endochronologist has confirmed that my daughter’s ADD is with almost certainty the direct result of the this thyroid condition. Although we feel blessed that we actually know why our daughter suffers from ADD, we would like to know more about the relationship between the 2 conditions.
Does anyone have any insight? Thanks.
Re: GTHR & ADD
I don’t know much but I do know our thyroids have a lot to do with our well-being. My dear mother has a thyroid condition and when it’s out of sync, she becomes very restless and can’t sit still.
To me, this would be a different kind of ADD as the classic ADD would not respond to thyroid medication as does my mother’s when her thyroid medication is adjusted. Does the endocrinologist offer any medications that might help your daughter’s ADD? Perhaps a consultation with a pediatric neurologist would give you additional insight.
Have you done a web search on your daughter’s condition? There can be aremarkable amount of information out there these days.
Re: GTHR & ADD
My understanding is that a hypothyroid condition can cause symptoms that mimic ADHD but that those symptoms should disappear when the right level of thyroid hormone is achieved with medication. Along with ADHD symptoms, children usually also exhibit a growth delay and high cholesterol.
I am not sure if they are the same, but my neighbor’s son has adhd and graves’ disease, they seem to aggravate each other as far as adhd behaviors as well as his fine motor skills are impaired(shaky writing). Unfortunately in our little slice of neighborhood he is not well regarded by most of the parents because he is the loudest child most have ever encountered and it is almost impossible to get him to stop a potentially destructive or hurtful behavior unless you get right in his face to get his attention. Not a tactic used by these inexperienced parents, he responds to me because I know how to reach him. He is very sweet, I like him a lot and wish I could get the other parents to give him a break, he has had a hard babyhood. Anyway, he has some ld’s but they may be a result of his bio mother’s lack of pre-post natal care and drug problem. His other symptom that I am aware of is his body stays warmer than the rest of us. He wears shorts and t shirts outside when the rest of the kids are wearing at least jackets because otherwise he would be too hot. I hope this helped some, I am sure your doc can point you in the direction of some good places to search also. Best wishes.
