My 1st grader is showing signs of dyslexia. Sister is now a 7th grader with dyslexia and ADD. School told me if they saw the signs they would test and he has them but because he just got a “A“ ‘s on his first report card they say he doesnt need testing/help. Even with family history. I cannot believe we must wait for our children to fail before we help when we know more than likely what the diagnosis is. I would appreciate any help.
Thanks!
Re: Help! Not failing but scholl wont test
I would check into this some more if you can. My understanding is that the parents can request the school test their child and they have to do it. I’m not an expert on the law but I know that here the papers must be submitted by the parents requesting the testing be done. The school is required to do the testing and then required to meet with you to discuss the results.
I haven’t even had my third child who is in first grade tested yet. Last summer, my first and third child started going to a tutor who specializes in Dyslexia. She did some testing when they started and her tests are sufficient to get them a 504. They are recognized tests and she is a certified teacher. They were not given a large number of tests because she was testing for a specific diagnosis, Dyslexia. Maybe you could persue a diagnosis this way. It didn’t cost more than our hourly fee for tutoring. She tested them when she first began tutoring them.
Schools are required to intervene when there is a problem. If he isn’t having problems there is nothing to gauge what help he is going to need. If you are concerned about dyslexia and would like to get treatment before it interferes with school you can have private testing done.
