HELP!!! testing information has me going in circles

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Our son is finshing his testing through the school district and we have a meeting in two weeks to discuss results. Now I’ve read some of the state(MA) and no child act information and it mentions getting copies of results atleast two days before the meeting yet the teacher told me we won’t get a copy until the meeting. If so how can we address our concerns or state what we would like to see happen if we have to read the results at the same time and process it all. I keep pushing for a copy but is that wrong also someone mentioned an advocate could help at the meeting but I think that might cause more of a problem at the first meeting.
HELP my head is spinning I don’t want to mess up this opportunity at the meeting

meli8,

Did you get a copy of your rights when you signed to have testing done? In MI, I received that copy when I signed papers to start speech and language testing. If the school does not allow you to have a copy of the test results until the meeting date, review on that date hear what the school has to say but don’t sign or agree to anything until you have had an opportunity to reall obsorb information. I have not gotten to this point yet (testing still being done), but I know that I need time to really understand all information before I feel like I can respond appropriately.

WRite a very nice, grateful, appreciative letter to the teacher, principal, and head of special ed. You might want to hand deliver it to the teacher with a smile and some chocolate so it gets there first and s/he doesn’t feel stabbed in the back… you can explain that you udnerstand she doesn’t make the decisions so you’re just doing what you gotta do and you *know* she’s doing her best.

Say, “i am really looking forward to meeting with you on ____, so we can plan my son’s IEP. I do have one concern, though. I have been told that the test results for my son will not be available to me until the day of the meeting.
I will need to have the legally required two days in order to review these results in order to be able to understand my son’s learning strengths, weaknesses, and to fully participate in this meeting. If the results are not available until (____that date), then the meeting will need to be rescheduled for at least two days after that date. Of course, I wouled like the results as soon as possible, as more than two days would be preferred.
I can be reached @youremailhere, phone number, whatever :-)

Sincerely,

The sweetest, gentlest, yet assertive mother in the world.
