Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Help my 8yr daughter had her 3 year re-eval last school year and they said she did not need to be on IEP because she was progressing in class. Well here we are new year new teacher and I was told yesterday that the teacher is worried. She said she was giving her to Dec. and if her work did not inprove that she was going to refer her. Here is her WISC scaled scores
Information 8 picture completion 8
Similarities 7 coding 4
Arithmetic 10 picture arrangement 12
vocabulary 8 block design 10
comprehension 6 object assembly 12
digit span 11 symbol search 6

Also I am not sue what this means- On a test of visual-motor integration skills (Bender), ______ performance suggested that she appeared to have some difficulties in her designs characterized by distortion and integration. Based upon the Koppitz scoring system, _______ obtained an age equivalent approximating that of a 5.6 to 5.8 year old.
Thank you for any help!!!

Hi Cathy,

I encourage you to scroll down to October 21 on this bulletin board where there was a previous discussion about understanding the WISC. There is a link which lists what each one of the subtests measures.

Blessings, momo

Two more things to consider:

Is the teacher suggesting that your daughter may have a learning disability? Does she suspect that? You should ask her that specifically and ask her to say what she suspects. If she suspects an l.d., then you should ask for more specific testing taylored to the identification of a specific disability.

Second, the WISC is not a tool designed to identify a learning disability. It may help but, if an l.d. is suspected, there are better measures, ones specifically designed to reveal the disability and alert people to the kind of help a child needs.

Good luck.

Carol
