High School Diplomas in Pa

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I hope that what I heard is wrong. I was told that before Gov. Ridge left Pa as part of the Pa school testing he enacted all kids have to pass test to graduate H.S. The results of the test as somehow indicated on the Diploma.

Anyone know. If this is true it could have a negative effect on the future of many of our kids.

Marion,

I don’t know about PA, but our state (NC) will begin an exit exam next year for ALL 11th graders. Those who are exempt will not get a regular diploma and neither will those who don’t pass the test. That is the trend and every state will eventually go to it. There was some federal legislation enacted that make it necessary. Where I disagree is that I think there ought to be at least a two tier diploma, one for college prep and one for workforce prep. Kids have to pass Algebra 1 in our state to get a diploma, and some LD math kids are going to have a hard time with that, yet they may be very capable in other subjects. We’ll just have to see how the lawsuits go that challenge the laws.

My son is a senior here in PA. His class of 2002 had to do a senior project before graduating. I do not know when the exit tests begin. But not this year anyway. I have heard about the test but do not know what year they will be starting it. I still have 2 kids in school.
