Hello,
My name is Kim Swygert and I’m a student at California State University, Chico majoring in elementary education with a concentration in special education.
I’m currently enrolled in SPED 343, “Overview of Special Education” instructed by Rita Mulholland, PhD.
I’ve been assigned to ask 5 questions to a parent of a child with learning disabilities. I’m hoping someone on this discussion board wouldn’t mind taking out 5 minutes or so (maybe less!) of their time to reply to my questions. I know most of you are busy, but I would really appreciate your responses. I believe this assignment will benefit all because I think we need the best special education teachers possible to help children succeed!
Questions:
1. Do you feel that teachers’ expectations are too high?
2. Do teachers value all skills of your child, or just focus more on academic skills?
3. What types of supplementary aids and services are provided on behalf of your child? If so, do you feel that what is provided is adequate?
4. How much independence does your child have in class?
5. Do you feel that teachers rely too much on the standardized curriculum, or do they more informally assess the students’ needs?
I would like to thank you in advance for responding and your help with this. If you would rather respond privately than posting here, my email is [email protected].
Thanks again!
Kim
