I need your help. I e-mailed a request for a copy of my sons spec ed records. I just received an e-mail from the resource room teacher stating that the spec ed supervisor would be contacting me. WHY? I have no idea.
Is there a specific form that I need to fill out? What do you, wonderful people, suggest that I do? I have never requested a copy of his records in four years of special ed; I am ready to do this.
Re: How do I get copies of spec ed records
Oh dear I never knew that there were bad schools.
You need to show up in person and get the records right there and then before the school alters them.
bgb. bad advice NEVER I repeat NEVER go through the chain of command. Start at the top before they can conspire. If they are not forthcomming with your records then it is safe to assume that they are up to no good.
Re: How do I get copies of spec ed records
The special education maybe the special education director or the lead teacher for special education. In my district, all request for copies must be handled through the district office. This maybe the same type of policy for your district as well. When making a request for records always send a certified letter to the special education director indicating the day that you will be picking the records up. As a teacher I am leary of sending confidential information through the mail. Make a copy of the request for your records as well. Hope this helps.

Whoa! I don’t know why the supervisor would need to talk to you either! If they are into game playing, be careful. He/she might call right at supper/bedtime/ or during work when you can not give it your full attention. Do you have caller ID? I’m serious! I’m dealing with two schools and one I will only communicate with in writting because SO many things seem to be totally misunderstood when done verbally. Even if you feel confortable with discussing this on the phone, I’d document whatever was said and e-mail the school a copy.
All I can tell you is that I, too, recently asked for my son’e sped ed records for the first time in 4 years. It was an e-mail request (no special form) to the assistant principal as he seems to be the IEP team leader. The stuff was mailed to me the next day, no questions asked, and this is with the “bad” school! Maybe its as simple as the supervisor is your IEP leader?
Peter and Pam Wright’s book “From Emotions to Advacacy” list the chain of commend on who to make this request from and a sample letter. I don’t have the book in front of me but I’d think the Principal would be next? Hopefully someone else can be move helpful.
