How do we get child out of special ed

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

BIG Question and need help (this is long but we really need help and I tried to explain as much as possible….

Had a meeting with the school superintendent yesterday about our 8 year old son whom has been in Special ed for the past 3 years.

History, we are military—moved to Hawaii last year. He started special ed in first grade in Virginia due to some underlying problems—last year was BLIND to the fact that Special Ed really wasn’t helping him, this year still blind up until the beginning of the new school year. when I started to really push his learning.

Told the spec ed teacher last year that he was not going to be pushed to thrid because he had really NOT learned anything (they didn’t try and we weer too stup9id to really know much at the IEP meetings other than to just agree. They held him back—

NOw here we are this year, the only learning he has truly done is from home—we told all at the meeting yesterday that we wanted to take OUR child out of spec ed and get him in a normal second grade class where we KNOW he would be able to learn, NOT fall behind and get used to being in an honest to goodness real class!

You would have thought we were awful parents to sugeest we place our child in regular second grade, give him a chance to succeed (we know he can) WITHOUT SPECIAL ED!!!!

School Says NO WAY—we say YES or I pull him out anyway and homeschool (we have six kids—not exactly waht I would to do)

Has anyone successfully pulled their child out of spec ed—it is hurting him more than helping him—see we also have a child with Williams Syndrome (8 yrs) whom is in the same class with him—there are about 6 in that class and all of them except him REALLY need to be there —most are mildly retarded such as my daughter.

Thanks for your help

Hi I dont know about pulling him out of special ed class but my daughter is in second grade and she is in the reg. classroom and the special ed teacher comes in several times a day to help differant kids with the subjects. the class also splits into differant reading group and a reading recovery thacher has one group, the ld teacher has a group and the two second grade thachers each have a group. the two specialtity teachers can teach differant reading stratigies to the kids having differant types of problems. Can your son be put in a reg. class and be pulled out for an hour a day or something? Thats what they used to do for my oldeson (way back when).Maybe you could check that out. That way he can learn with the second graders and still get the help he needs. GOOD LUCK!

I agree with dj, perhaps having him included in reg. class with sp.ed support/acommodations as necessary would be a better placement for him.

We are military too, in Germany, my kids now attend a DODDS school.
Considering all the hoopla Hawaii had concerning poor schools, especially sp.ed dept. I think they are trying to make sure they cover their hind ends. I remember reading that the courts had to intervene in the the schools.

I also remember the EFMP screener at Ft Eustis telling me Hawaii was NOT a good place to go if you had special needs kids. One reason we haven’t taken the opportunity to go there.

I think if you get him out of the classroom first, then you could take baby steps to get him out of sp.ed completely if you feel he doesn’t need it.

You could go to 15 minute consult, that way if you saw that he needed some of the supports, you could still access them.
Hope this helps.

Also, on the main page of this site is a link to STOMP, which is an organization for military parents of special needs kids.

Hi My daughter is ld add also .In her case she is in the reg. classroom and the ld teacher comes in several times a day to help differant kids with differant subjects. Why cant your child be in reg class and still get the extra help with out dropping it all together? In the olden days my son who was also ld was pulled out of class along with several others for an hour a day or so. Might this work also. I can see your point abot not wanting him in a class where the kids need way more help than your son. This cant be to good for his self esteem. Talk to his teacher and see if you can get them to try reg class with accomadations. Worth a try GOOD LUCK

Hey again,
Yes we lived in Hampton also, 96-2000. Husband was at Ft Monroe. My kids went to Forrest elementary, that’s where my oldest was qualified for sp.ed.
Oh, and I looked up the site rover mentioned EFMconnections.org It has a lot of good info, I like the bulletin boards here better though. They don’t have a way to access a general forum so you can just find folks in your vicinity to hook up with. Talk to ya soon. Best wishes.

Amazing small world eh? My friend that still lives there (you might know her, Dee Dee L, has two boys, one is I think a 3rd grader, the other is a 6th grader)
has told me recently that Mrs. Waters has breast cancer. I hope she is doing ok. We were active in pta and all when we were there, it helped us that we had a good relationship with the school staff when it came time to do the eval. Another mom who came to me after we finished was having a much harder time getting into the system.
Boy, we sure do miss that 24 theatre! It was just a couple of blocks from the house, we are real movie buffs. Oh well, this too shall pass. We have no idea when we will be leaving Germany, our deros is July 03, but my husband just got attached to V corps and is now wearing a brown uniform and playing in the sandbox with the rest of his friends. Our hope is to make it back to the Hampton roads area at some point for retirement (4 more yrs). Busch Gardens! The beach, the mountains! A 24 movie theater! The important things in life!!!LOL!
Best wishes.

We lived on Tidemill Ln (Heather Lake) familiar with that area—Ms. Pitt was kindergarten teacher.

I really didn’t like the Hampton area—like Hawaii much better with the exception of the Special Ed dept :) Oh yeah and the higher cost of food. Well and I guess the freedom of just being able to hop on the freeway and head to another state if we wish :) BUT wouldn’t change the weather or the beaches here!

That 24 theater was by the Wal-mart and Target off Mercury right? We hit that one quite a few times.

I understand about the weather completely, I am a Florida girl originally, you can imagine what it is like in Germany for me!! These days I get excited when the weather warms up to 45, yippeeee!
Oh, the 24 theatre, by the parkway between Hampton Woods/Michaels Woods and Langley. Just off Big Bethel Rd. Used to have a Winn Dixie there that closed up. I know which one you are talking about though. UMMM, Walmart…..one of my favorite places to hang out. (spoken in the voice of Homer Simpson).
My kids learned to ski and snowboard these past two winters so being in the Hampton area will be good for them to keep up with it. Well, I mean the mountains are close enough to drive to but we can still play at the beach in the summer.
By the way, how is the school situation going? Any word on things? We got so off topic, but it’s great to talk to someone familiar with the lifestyle.

By the way, Heidelberg DODDS is for the most part a really good school district. I was just looking at the honor roll list for 6th graders ( I have one of those too), 15 kids from my son’s 5th grade class are on it for the second time, 8 of them on the 4.0 list. He had a really great teacher for 5th but I was hearing from another mom about her daughter’s 6th grade team, she’s really impressed with them.

Hope all is well. Best wishes.

German huh? My neighbors were sationed there a while back and they were talking about rations for alcohol and how there was NO cable—still the same?

Anyhow about school—we have a straight A 6th grader as well (always been the better one) 2 second graders in special ed, special ed is working for my Williams Syndrome daughter just not our son because =he is trapped in that room all day with children like my daughter.
Three first graders (2 of whom are really excelling and 1 that is way behind).

As you can tell we are a blended family—he had 3 and I had 3 (we have FULL custody of all) all ages 12, 7 (just turned), twins that are 6 and two 8 year olds.

I guess the school is OK just not for the 1 first grader and our son—we are trying everything to get him back into a regular classroom—I have let them know that I will homeschool if that is what I have to do because he is regressing in that enviroment. With so many kids, that is not my first choice especially since the oldest starts middle school next year and I wanted to try and do as much as I could in that school hoping that would keep her the good student and not get thrown off track because now they go to school on base BUT this middle scholol sh will be thrown in with the general HAwaiian population and it is not the greatest neighborhood over there if you get my drift

How many kiddos do you have and how long before you leave Germany . You guys are Army correct? We are a Navy bunch over here.

Take care

Hi DJ,

We have a new IEP meeting in a couple of weeks—That is what I am hoping to do BUT from what I have seen (I help out in my daughter’s class on occassion) they only have 1 aid and that is because this child is very handicapped BUT SOMEHOW (I need to talk to his mom) she has managed to keep him in reg class all day with an aid…

Thanks

You never mentioned what his disability is. If he isn’t a disruption to the learning of others or the teachers right to teach then I can’t imagine any school district that would go to due process to keep a child in. In cases of severe behavior which interfers with the above mentioned situations, they will fight parents. Just refuse to sign placement papers. Prepare to take more responsibility for his learning at home. Sounds like you’re already pretty busy.

I think you are on the right track with having the special ed teacher do a combination of pull out and classroom inclusion for remediation. The book Negotiating the special ed. maxe has been helpful to us in writng IEP goals, making sure they are followed and monitoring progress. Good luck!

Hey again!
Yes, we are an Army family. We have no idea really when we will be leaving, Dad was pulled from his job and attached to another unit, he’s been in Kuwait now for about 17 days supporting the other unit’s mission and no end date. Quite a surprise, we had a week and a half notice.

Anyway, we do have coffee, cigarettes and alchohol rationed, I don’t use any of them so we don’t actually use the ration card. We do have cable, AFN has really improved since the early 90’s, we also get some British and German channels, European mtv though is very risque. The modesty standard in Europe is lower than in the states. We also have DSL computer connection that is included with our phone bill, inexpensive too.

I was thinking about your son in the self contained class, I understand it not being the best place for him. I am not exactly sure what qualified him for sp.ed in the beginning but what you may want to do is figure out if there are services they can provide that you would like him to have, if there aren’t any then you may want to see about getting him declassified. On the other hand, my older son who is qualified, gets mostly environmental accommodations and support in the reg. classroom. I listed his IEP on the teaching math bulletin board, you could do a search for my name and pull it up. Perhaps you would find it helpful in what your son could use. A bit long to write out again here. Some are as simple as preferential seating, a distraction free area for testing, allowed to retake tests for grade improvement, use of computer/spell check/ calculator. There are more but you see what I mean. Most I think I could get in a 504 but I like the idea of parental safeguards and being able to access the resource room when it is needed. We actually have him in resource room for an hour every other day in place of an elective so that he can get extra help for math, this has been a really challenging year for math. This placement occurred at the end of Jan. so we are still looking to see if it is working.

Hope this helps some. Keep us updated ok?
