How to stop giving a kid risperdal

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

My nephew is 5 years old. He has been taking risperdal as a treatment for his autism for quite sometimes. As we have been reading about risperdal side effects, we decided to stop giving risperdal to my nephew. Could we immediately stop giving risperdal? Or we have to do it gradually by decreasing the dosage?
Could someone please suggest the best way to stop risperdal?

I’d have to ask if he was actually having the side effects or if you are just afraid of them? The first thing to do is discuss all concerns with his doctor before making the decision to stop the medication.

I understand how scary the side effect lists can be. My daughter takes 5 “heavy” meds to treat all her issues and the side effect lists can be quite extensive. We’ve been fortunate that she has only slight side effects and the meds really help her be functional.

Dear All,

Thanks to geodob and scifinut for your reply.

Yes, actually we are quite afraid of the side effects. We are not sure whether his drowsiness has anything to do with risperdal.

And yes, we are going to consult his doctor about this.

Thanks again for the advise and also for letting us that we are not alone.

Santi
